MARKET WATCH: New Health Care Facilities in Medical Center and Stone Oak to Break Ground in 2016

It should be no surprise to observers of the strength of San Antonio’s health care industry. It can be reflected in the beginning of construction of one new facility and another organization’s plans to expand one of its largest hospitals.  The Institute for Women’s Health recently broke ground on a seven-story medical office building that will host several state-of-the-art multispecialty services and clinics.  The 72,000-square-foot complex will be built on a site leased from Methodist Healthcare System on its South Texas Medical Center campus in the city’s Northwest Side.  Institute for Women’s Health has operations in numerous locations around town, including two in the medical center area, one in far West San Antonio, Stone Oak, near Alamo Heights, the Northeast Side, and north of downtown.  Institute officials said the new office facility will improve patient access to many of the organization’s services, including OB/GYN, cardiology, radiology, mammography and nephrology.

Construction will feature a pedestrian sky bridge that will link with a multi-story parking garage that is part of Methodist Healthcare’s medical center campus expansion.  The new building will also accommodate family- and pain-management clinics.  Additionally, a pharmacy and laboratory will be located on the ground level of the structure.  Local firm LK Design Group and Ponder & Ponder Architects have designed the planned building. Construction is expected to be complete in spring 2017.

Methodist Healthcare system announced recently it plans to invest more than $60 million to grow its hospital in Stone Oak. This represents the impressive residential and commercial development that continues in far North San Antonio, especially with so many health care providers in that area.  The expansion of Methodist Stone Oak Hospital will include a three-story structure hosting more than 100,000 additional square feet of space built above an existing single-story facility. About 20,000 square feet of space in the current floor will be renovated as part of the project.  The expansion will result in Methodist Stone Oak having more than 70 additional beds, including more than 20 surgical step-down beds. Also, the hospital will add space for women’s services and for its neonatal intensive care unit, as well as a 15-bed acute rehabilitation facility.

Construction, which will include a three-level parking garage, is slated to start in the first quarter of 2016 and will take about 18 months to finish. Methodist Healthcare officials said the Stone Oak hospital, which opened in 2009, likely will see future expansions.
