Mixed Use Hotel Proposed Near Main Plaza

San Antonio company REM Hospitality has secured less than 1 acre of land near San Fernando Cathedral and future site of the new Frost tower, with plans for a hotel-apartment development. Located at East Commerce Street and North Main Avenue, the proposed development will include office and retail space.

REM, a hotel development and property management company, is envisioning a Choice Hotels International boutique hotel that will involve 30,000 square feet of office and 8,000 square feet of retail space. This would be the first hotel/apartment development to also feature commercial/office space in San Antonio.

Officials with REM said this project would provide more residential and office space downtown. In recent years, San Antonio business leaders have said that revitalizing the urban core means encouraging more people to see the area filled with work/live/play opportunities. REM bought the site from Choice Hotels, which had planned to develop a hotel in the same spot.  The Cambria-branded development will have a variety of state-of-the-art amenities, including an interior/exterior roof deck and pool, a bar and lounge, a conference room with a private kitchen, and views of downtown.

Plans call for construction on the 180-room development to start July 1 of this year, and last for 18 months. REM hopes to finish the project by the end of 2017.  The Cambria Hotel and Suite concept is relatively new for Choice Hotels, which calls the mixed-use development cost-efficient to build and to operate.

Additionally, Choice Hotel calls the Cambria brand “a smart modular design that enables a market-driven mix of room types and suites. An operationally efficient food and beverage program that supports an increased guest capture rate. And useful technology that allows responsive service without adding staff.” Mayse & Associates is the firm designing the building.  This adds to an increasing inventory of hotel/apartment developments in San Antonio.
