April 3, 2014 by Giselle Guadron

(San Antonio)  Nestled in downtown San Antonio is the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center.  So many people have walked through its doors, whether they’re from out of town or local. You may have attended a conference or an event here. Well the next time you attend a conference here you might be surprised with all the changes you may see.

You may have noticed how much San Antonio has grown and how many more events are coming to the city. So our buildings and structures are growing as well. It has been a few years since the expansion of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center has been in discussion. There had been planning involved and a timeline to see how long this project would last. So far we are about to enter Phase 3 in May, which is the realignment of Market Street. The entire project is due to be completed in July of 2016.

Some of the main goals of this expansion project are to have more meeting rooms, meeting space and more exhibit halls. With the new design of the convention center there will be a new front entry, including a room that will have a terrace and will give you a view of Market Street. Other amenities will include an outdoor café named, “Lila Café” that will feature an outdoor pizza oven. There will also be plenty of other food options and sundries available. You could even enjoy your snack at Hemisphere Park, which by the time this project is complete will have much more green space to enjoy. Michael Sawaya, CSEF Director at City of San Antonio is very excited with this project and added, “on the west side of the convention center there is a mural that will stay intact and now more people will be able to see it.”

With so many conventions already in place and many people expected to attend “this is the largest capital project this city has ever done,” said Sawaya. There is still more work to be done, but the finished product will be an incredible space that many people will be able to enjoy whether they are attending a conference or just stopping by to enjoy Lila Café.
