SAHA Installs Public Artwork

The NRP Group and the San Antonio Housing Authority will host a walking tour at 9:30 a.m. July 9 to celebrate newly designated artworks, “Al Paso del Tiempo / A Cyclical Journey Towards Home, Moon Garden, Cantos y Juegos and the Tree of Life Courtyard,” now on display at the Gardens At San Juan Square.

Gardens At San Juan Square offers market-rate one- through four-bedroom apartments on San Antonio’s West Side.  The new apartment homes are equipped with green components to make the homes more energy efficient. Community amenities include walking trails and green space to encourage walkability in the area. The art exhibit has been two years in the making. NRP Group and SAHA issued a call for artists in late 2014. Individual artists and teams of artists were asked to submit a biography, resume, 10 photo/video examples of works, a letter of interest and three references.

The selected artists, Donna Zarbin-Byrne and Diana Rodriguez Gil, worked with the NRP Group, SAHA and Alamo Architects to integrate the artwork into the landscape at the Gardens of San Juan. “This will be a highly visible gathering place for residents and community members,” said Dan Markson, NRP Group’s vice president of development, in a news release. “It promotes connectivity among the residents, on-site amenities, surrounding community and community activities.”

The NRP Group and SAHA have worked to revitalize the San Juan neighborhood since 2008. The addition of newly designed artwork will expose residents to works of art they can enjoy and call their own.

“SAHA is proud to partner with NRP Group to bring intriguing art to San Juan Square,” said David Nisivoccia, SAHA’s interim president/CEO, in the release. “Working with this neighborhood, that is 65 years in the making, we are pleased with these new additions that are part of the continuing revitalization efforts. These novel art pieces provide the San Juan neighborhood with additional points of pride for their community.

The Ohio-based NRP Group, founded in 1995, specializes in multifamily, senior and student housing nationwide. The company has 20 other San Antonio developments in its portfolio, including the Southtown-based Cevallos Lofts and The Flats at Big Tex, and Tobin Lofts at San Antonio College.
