VIA Transit Looks to Acquire New Real Estate

November 2, 2016 by Bexar Witness Staff

VIA Metropolitan Transit plans to purchase the site of the former Graham Central Station club.  The site, if acquired, would likely be re-developed as a new maintenance complex fro the transit entity. Santikos Entertainment has owned the 11.5-acre property, which has been in recent months under contract to VIA. Graham Central Station, or Graham’s, was once a popular large-scale nightclub venue in the 4900 block of Fredericksburg Road, just outside of the Loop 410/Interstate 10 junction. An attorney has been trying to petition the city to change official land use for the site, from mixed-use center to specialized center.

The city’s planning commission recommended approving the land use proposal in late October. City staff found the requested land use change compatible with the city’s unified development code. A zoning change for the property is needed with city approval, too.

The VIA board of trustees also met on the matter in late October. If all goes well, the transitional project would involve demolition of the existing buildings and necessary site preparation before development of a new bus maintenance facility begins. The property is accessible from Fredericksburg Road and Pin Oak, a residential road. The bus maintenance facility could prove useful as it would be located near Balcones Heights, in an area that includes major corridors such as Fredericksburg Road and a large VIA bus station off Wonderland Mall.
